THE DAY I REALISED WOMEN CAN’T SELL LIKE MEN (AND SHOULDN’T TRY)

I’m Suzi Seddon, and I spent years trying to fit into a sales world that wasn’t built for me.

Picture this:

It’s the early 1990s. 

I’m one of three women in a 27-man sales team. We had to wear skirts to work (seriously), and the entire sales operation was designed by men, for men.

I was making sales calls every day, and management kept pushing these rigid scripts and techniques that were supposed to make me “more effective.”

They wanted me to be sharp. Assertive. Always closing.

Instead?

My sales absolutely collapsed.

And worse – I started to dread picking up the phone.

I sounded robotic.
Stiff.
Like I’d had a personality transplant.

I felt awkward, pushy, manipulative.

Every conversation felt like I was performing someone else’s script. Wearing someone else’s mask.

My confidence tanked.

I started avoiding sales calls. Making excuses. Finding literally anything else to do.

It took me weeks to work out what had gone wrong.

And then I realised…

The system wasn’t designed for how women sell.

It was suffocating my natural instincts – the very things that made me good at connecting with people.

So I ditched the scripts.

Went back to just talking to people. Having proper conversations. Reading between the lines. Listening to what they weren’t saying. Trusting my gut.

My Dad used to call it “chewing the fat.”

And the moment I did?

My sales went stratospheric.

Better yet – I actually enjoyed it again.

Here’s the thing though…

That was over 30 years ago, and honestly? Not much has changed.

Most sales training is still designed by men, for men.

The techniques
The scripts
The “all objections can be overcome”
The pushiness
The “always be closing” mentality

It’s all built around masculine energy – and it’s still being taught as “the correct way to sell.”

No wonder so many women struggle with it.

Fast forward a few years from my breakthrough, when I’ve dropped the male BS and leant into what I (and all women) do naturally…

I’m trying to win a £30 million contract with British Telecom to supply IT contractors nationwide.

The head of procurement (Dave) was a nightmare.

Every time I rang him, he’d slam the phone down. I couldn’t get past “Hello.”

Then I spotted something at the bottom of the tender document he’d sent: a file path that ended with the word “/peregrine.”

So the next time I called, I said:

“Hello Dave, it’s Suzi! I didn’t know you were a bird watcher.”

Two seconds of stunned silence.

Then: “How the hell did you know that?”

Within minutes, he was laughing and curious.

That one tiny observation (something most of the blokes I worked with would never have noticed) broke through the wall.
I won the contract.

And that right there is the power of feminine energy in sales.

It’s not about being louder or pushier.

It’s about:

  • Noticing the human details that others miss (intuition over interrogation)
  • Creating genuine warmth that makes people want to open up
  • Trusting your gut when something feels off (instead of pushing through)
  • Making people feel genuinely heard, not just processed through a sales funnel
